Nowadays, pretty much every major automaker has their own proprietary suite of advanced driver assistance systems. But not all ADAS are created equal.

Toyota is well-known for making some of the safest cars—10 different models won an IIHS Top Safety Pick award in 2024—and that’s largely thanks to Toyota Safety Sense™, which has been lauded by critics and consumers as some of the best safety technology on the market.

Read on to check out all the coolest TSS features and how they can keep you and your family safe on the road.

TSS 3.0

The latest and greatest iteration of the tech has some awesome new features, and also introduces massive improvements to previously existing ones.

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection

PCS is among the most important features in the Safety Sense package. When the car is in motion, it’s designed to detect other cars, pedestrians, and cyclists ahead and emit an audio/visual cue to alert the driver. If action isn’t taken, the vehicle will employ automatic emergency braking.

  • TSS 3.0 enhances the technology with new front sensors that make the system more effective at intersections. It also has improved motorcyclist detection.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist

When driving above 30 miles per hour, LDA will alert the driver if the car drifts too far out of the center of the lane. It can now also provide gentle corrective steering if action isn’t taken.

  • TSS 3.0 improves the vehicle’s ability to detect lanes using objects like guardrails.

Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

This adaptive cruise control uses the vehicle’s sensors to monitor the following distance between the car ahead. The vehicle will automatically slow down or speed up to keep a consistent distance. The system works at all speeds above 20 miles per hour.

  • TSS 3.0 fine-tunes the speed adjustments to be smoother, and now features four distance settings instead of three.

Lane Tracing Assist

When DRCC is engaged, LTA detects markings and gives steering assist to keep the vehicle centered in the lane.

  • TSS 3.0 introduces the steering assistance feature. It also employs an Emergency Driving Stop System, which monitors driver attentiveness and can even stop the vehicle in a properly equipped car.

Road Sign Assist

This feature is designed to increase the driver’s awareness of posted road signs. The sensor detects speed limit signs, stop signs, yield signs, and do not enter signs and shows them on the car’s Multi-Information Display.

  • TSS 3.0 allows RSA to recognize a wider variety of signs.

Automatic High Beams

When the AHB detects vehicles ahead, it will turn off the high beams, then turn them back on after oncoming traffic is cleared. This improves safety for all parties involved.

Proactive Driving Assist

This feature is all-new for TSS 3.0. Vehicles equipped with this feature can detect objects parked on the side of the road, gently slow the vehicle down when objects ahead are detected, and provide corrective steering on curves.

Other Toyota Safety Sense Packages

TSS 3.0 is now standard in many 2024 and 2025 models, but if you drive a Toyota from an earlier year, you may have a previous generation of Safety Sense. If you’re unsure which one you have, check your owner’s manual or contact your local Toyota dealership near Joliet, IL.
