The Highlander Through the Years

Named for a famed area of Scotland, the Toyota Highlander has always displayed the ruggedness and quiet refinement one associates with that region of the British Isles. The first Highlanders arrived on our roads in 2001, giving drivers something they hadn’t experienced before, a midsize SUV that handled more like a car than a truck. This was the result of Toyota’s decision to build the Highlander on a modified Camry platform with a four-wheel independent suspension and a unibody structure. This was different from the body-on-frame design used by other automakers to build their SUVs, and as a result, the Highlander has better handling, cornering, and fuel efficiency, due in large part to the lightening of the frame.

Each of the first generation Highlander models came with a choice of a 2.4-liter I-4 gas engine with 155 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque or a 3.0-liter V6 gas engine that can deliver up to 220 horsepower and 222 lb-ft of torque. While the first Highlander models had seating for five passengers, Toyota introduced a three-row option with seating for up to seven passengers in 2004. Two years later, Toyota added a gas-electric hybrid powertrain as an option on the Highlander.

The second generation of the Highlander debuted in 2008 and traded in the Camry frame for a longer and wider Avalon frame. As a result, all models of the Highlander going forward would feature three rows of seats, providing seating for up to seven passengers in this second-generation model. While the first year of the second generation Highlander would offer only a 3.5-liter V6 gas engine with 270 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque, a 2.7-liter I-4 gas engine would be added in 2009. This offers 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid version of the Highlander remained unchanged for the second generation, continuing to utilize a 3.3-liter V6 with a combined 270 horsepower with its electric motor. This model provides the best fuel economy of the three engine options, while the conventional gas 3.5-liter V6 gives you the best acceleration.

Toyota was not content to leave things alone and went for a more rugged design for the third generation of the Highlander, which first hit the road in 2014. This model also features a roomier and more refined interior than the prior two models, providing seating for up to eight passengers. The same three engine options were carried over from the last year of the second generation Highlander, although Toyota beefed up performance by adding an eight-speed automatic transmission. As a result, the Highlander with the powerful V6 was able to go from 0 to 80 miles per hour in a solid 7.2 seconds. In addition, Toyota began offering the Highlander Hybrid as a separate model built around the successful third-generation Highlander model. Toyota also made its suite of safety features standard on the 2017 Highlander, providing drivers with advanced assistance systems without paying a premium for safety.

The fourth generation of the Highlander became the first to adopt the Toyota New Global Architecture, leading to a more rigid overall design. This gives drivers even better handling and passengers a softer, more comfortable ride. This model was introduced in 2020 and has a maximum cargo space of 84.3 cubic feet with the seats folded down. Toyota made some changes to the powertrains on offer, initially eliminating the I-4 gas engine, making the V6 engine standard, and changing the Highlander Hybrid model to a 2.5-liter I-4 matched with an electric motor, providing 243 horsepower. The standard 3.5-liter V6 gas engine on the fourth generation Highlander offers 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque, with the ability to tow up to 5,000 pounds. However, Toyota replaced this after 2022 with a 2.4-liter Turbo I-4 engine capable of 265 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. While smaller than the V6 engine, the I-4 utilizes a turbocharger to boost performance, which is why it provides more torque and can still allow the Highlander to tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The Toyota Highlander was one of the first standard models to offer a hybrid powertrain back in the 2006 model year. This was at a time when most other hybrids were compact vehicles purpose-built for this type of powertrain. With the Highlander Hybrid, Toyota showed that a hybrid could be placed on a standard production model without losing any of the features or capabilities that made the model so popular in the first place. When you come to our dealership, you will have the ability to choose the Highlander you want. We’ll even let you pick the color you like best, so you can make your new Highlander your own!

The 2022 Highlander

The 2022 Toyota Highlander is part of the fourth generation of this exceptional model. It features a standard 3.5-liter V6 gas engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that delivers 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. As a result, you can get exceptional fuel economy regardless of the trim level and drivetrain you choose. For example, the front-wheel drive Highlander provides 29 MPG on the highway, while opting for available all-wheel drive will give you an impressive 27 MPG on the highway.

Toyota offers six different trim levels of the 2022 Highlander, ranging from the base model Highlander L to the fully-loaded Platinum top trim. Each Highlander model comes with standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, the latest in active driver assistance technology. This is probably why the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2022 Highlander a Top Safety Pick+, meaning that it is one of the safest models in its vehicle class.
