A Look Back at the Iconic Corolla

Did you know that the Corolla has been around well over a half-century? The first Corolla model rolled off the assembly line in 1966, and within a decade, it became the best-selling car on the planet. It remains one of the most popular cars today, despite the SUV’s explosion in popularity. What makes this compact sedan so desirable? After twelve generations and millions sold, Toyota has it figured out.

In 1966, the Corolla began its long life as a tiny four-door with a 1.1L engine, but it wasn’t until 1968 that the Corolla became available in the United States. Toyota redesigned and enlarged the Corolla in 1970, tailoring it to American tastes. The third-generation Corolla saw another size increase, and it was the first Toyota to include a catalytic converter to meet American emissions requirements. Emissions standards continued tightening, which created an opportunity for Toyota to dominate sales.

The fifth generation saw the first go-fast Toyota Corolla GT-S. Lovingly known to enthusiasts by its AE86 chassis code, it quickly gained cult status among street racers. By the sixth generation, Toyota had ditched the rear-wheel drive configuration in favor of a more economical front-wheel drive version. In 1988, the eighth-generation Corolla was released with the first aluminum engine, a 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder. In 2016, during its 11th generation, the Corolla nameplate hit its 50th anniversary.

The Corolla was redesigned from the ground up for the 2020 model year. This twelfth generation version included hatchback and sedan body styles with sleek, futuristic exterior lines and standard driver-assist safety systems. In a March 2019 press release, Toyota reported that over 46 million Corollas have been sold since its inception in 1966, ensuring the Corolla remains the world’s best-selling nameplate.

2023 GR Corolla

To some, a 300-horsepower Corolla hatchback sounds a little excessive, but excessive is exactly what Toyota was going for when it announced plans to develop a go-fast Corolla for the 2023 model year. The highly anticipated GR Corolla’s two-trim lineup targets other sport compacts in a quest to win the hot hatch wars. Based on its capabilities, the GR Corolla might just be a shoo-in.

In addition to a spritely 300-horsepower 3-cylinder power plant, the GR Corolla features a six-speed manual transmission (no automatic will be offered) and standard GR-Four all-wheel drive for grippy cornering. The selectable GR-Four system gives drivers the freedom of choice for power distribution: 60/40 front-to-rear for everyday driving, 30/70 for drifting, or 50/50 for a day of track racing.

MotorTrend calls the upcoming 2023 GR Corolla “the most powerful, jaw-dropping Corolla ever,” and that’s just the article’s headline. It goes on to use words like “feral” to describe this hot hatch’s otherworldly power, and we agree. Buyers can choose from two trims: the Core and the Circuit Edition. Choosing the latter gets you front and rear limited-slip differentials, a carbon-fiber roof, and an upgraded cabin.
