Diagnosing problems with your vehicle can be tricky—even if a warning light has been illuminated on your dashboard, it does not always tell you everything you need to know. Having people you can count on to look at your vehicle, figure out exactly what the issue is, and have things fixed up right away is invaluable and provides you with tremendous peace of mind. Figuring out when an issue is your vehicle’s alternator rather than its battery is particularly difficult, but our experts excel at diagnosing issues correctly and fixing them quickly. Let’s take a closer look at what your vehicle’s alternator does and some things to watch for when it starts going bad.

What Is a Vehicle Alternator?

The alternator is an essential part of your vehicle that, along with your battery, is responsible for providing power to your car. Many people think the battery in their vehicle is what powers everything, but if you have a conventional gas-powered vehicle, then that is not the case. Your car’s battery serves a very important function: it provides the power for your vehicle to start when you first turn the key or push the button to get your engine going. A fair amount of energy is required to get things moving initially, which is what your battery does.

Once your engine starts, however, then your alternator takes over. The alternator is essentially an electromagnet that has a pulley connected to your engine by a belt—this is called the serpentine belt. As your vehicle’s engine runs, power goes from it through the belt and pulley system to a rotor that spins inside the alternator, creating electricity. Basically, the alternator turns the mechanical energy of your vehicle’s engine into electrical energy that can be used to recharge your vehicle’s battery and power other systems in your car.

You can think of the alternator as a mini power plant for your vehicle. Your car’s battery is quite powerful, but that power is used in a short burst to get things going, not for long-term energy. Once your engine is running, the alternator takes over to recharge your battery so it is ready for next time and to send power to the other electrical systems in your vehicle. Your power door locks and windows, dashboard lights, infotainment system, air conditioning, and speaker system are all powered by electricity coming from your vehicle’s alternator. As you might imagine, if something starts to go wrong with it, then a lot of other systems suffer.

Signs You Need a New Alternator

Because so many different parts of your vehicle are tied to the alternator, it can be tricky to determine when it is going bad. The biggest issue is that many of the indicators of a failing alternator can also mean your car’s battery is dying. Here at Romeoville Toyota, however, we are fully equipped to help you figure out exactly the problem with your vehicle. Some of the signs you should watch for to tip you off to a problem with your alternator include:

Dimming Lights

One of the surest and easiest signs to watch for is if any of your vehicle’s lights are dim; this is typically due to them not getting enough power from your alternator. Similarly, if your lights are too bright or you notice them flickering, then this can also indicate an alternator issue. One dim light may need to be replaced, but widespread dimming can mean an alternator problem.

Issues With Electrical Accessories

Since your alternator powers many parts of your vehicle, an issue can manifest with any of them. You might notice your power windows are slower to go up and down or that your vehicle’s infotainment system does not work properly. All of these things can mean your vehicle has electrical issues, which often come from a failing alternator.

Dead Battery

Although your battery can die as it approaches the end of its usage, a dead battery can also mean your alternator is not charging it properly. We can check your battery’s voltage to see how it is doing and test whether your alternator is charging it correctly. This makes it easier for us to tell what the cause of your issues is.

Trouble With Starting or Recurrent Stalling

When you have trouble starting your vehicle, this can often mean your battery has a problem. However, since battery issues can stem from a failing alternator, this is still worth considering. Similarly, if your vehicle starts but stalls often, your alternator is likely not doing its job to keep things running.

Battery Warning Light

One of the simplest ways to know there is a problem is when your vehicle tells you so with a warning light. If a battery warning light comes on, you likely have an issue with your battery or alternator. Figuring out which one is the cause is not always easy, but that is why we are here to help and get things fixed up for you.

Burning Rubber Smell

Any kind of bad smell coming from your vehicle is a warning that something is wrong; the smell of burning rubber can often indicate an alternator problem. This is a sign that your serpentine belt is failing or wearing out. You might also notice the smell of burning wires—if you have ever been near an electrical fire, then you know that smell. This tends to indicate a problem with your alternator itself, rather than the belt, and that it needs to be replaced.
